-learn to drive; -write more of the Dystopia O' Doom (say at least half); -get some work experience with a games company; -complete my degree to my own satisfaction.
Recommendations:
The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko. Gritty, noirish story set in Moscow, with vampires and plenty of moral ambiguity. The Night Watch are in an uneasy treaty with the Day Watch, with the Day Watch representing the Dark and the Night Watch representing the Light. But Light and Dark aren't in the Susan Cooper mode; they are first and foremost judgements of actions and concepts. (I'm about a third of the way through, so no spoilers in comments please!)
His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik. Napoleonic War! With dragons! An alternate history, needless to say, and it's lovely and dense and by the end I wished I had a dragon of my own.
Luck In The Shadows by Lynn Flewelling. Epic fantasy, and anyone who knows my tastes will know how rare it is that I'd recommend something in that genre. Slick rogue-centric, politically-focused first-in-a-series. Her main character is the most difficult of heroes: the naive boy Unknowingly Thrown Into Events. And she pulls it off!
